foultaleglitter asked:

Christianity and anime question! Japan has a habit of using Christian and specifically Catholic symbology as an aesthetic, much like Americans use Greek or Roman mythology for storytelling. What are your thoughts on it? Any particular standouts?

Ooooh, this is a great question! I wish I had a great answer.

I used to really be into those kind of aesthetic elements, those religious and particularly Catholic elements that added a cool tone to many series, and they used to excite me, but now I can’t think of many.

Nowadays, I get thrilled more by seeing important facets of faith, like the idea of grace, expressed in anime, even if (and almost always not) with purposeful connection to Christianity.

And occasionally, you get a series like Haibane Renmei, which uses elements from a variety of religions but certainly Christianity (even if ABe denies it, if I remember correctly…), while doing an even more outstanding job of expressing facets of faith like I mentioned earlier—in this case, ideas like sin, guilt, pain, love, forgiveness, and most importantly, the profound power of grace to set the prisoner free.
